My Background

A little bit about myself and my writing.

I owe everything to my dad. He had always been there for me. To push me on to try and better myself.

From early on I had my own room and played my own music. I used to read and enjoyed the worlds created by various authors. To the point where I attempted to create a story.

It was short and not very good, but I tried. Then I tried again and again.

My dad noticed this and read every little tale. I was 11 years old.

One evening he brought something home which I didn’t see till later. There I was writing with my trusty pencil and pad when he came into my room carrying a huge black monster of a typewriter.  Setting it onto my desk, he explained how it worked and hoped it would help me.

The burning question for me then, was how long was a story?

I had a Thunderbirds Annual and proceeded typing out the speech bubbles. I looked in books and my dad advised there should be inverted commas at each end of speech.

Several sheets later I had it typed up. Then my dad said something else.

‘Don’t forget the bit between that joins up the bits of speech.’

Of course, he was on about the descriptive part of writing.

This I tackled full on, to the best I could and enjoyed the exercise.

Work life beckoned and writing fell away, but never completely.

Several years later I had the chance to begin again, with a second hand portable Imperial 220 typewriter.

My dad died at the age of 52, which left a huge hole inside me.

Slowly, the writing began to get better. To the point I had a short story published in a magazine. Over a prolonged period, I hoped I had got better at the creative writing with half a dozen short stories printed. On top of those I managed to get a few articles into wood magazines.

A lot later I was still creating short stories when a friend suggested I try my hand at a longer story.

I agreed and several months later I had my very first Novella out. It was well received  and I began my second Novella.

I was quite happy working and creating my stories at an average of 350 words a day.

Now, even though I have my own Fretwork Business, I have just finished a book called That Which Survives, which is book 17.

In amongst my woodwork, I also now average a 1000 words a day and sometimes more.

Recently I did an 85,000 novel in 82 days. This done after my wood working day.

A few years ago I developed my way of regularly creating exciting books with my Easy Way To Outline.
